Burning Fat vs Burning Calories

To lose weight and get in shape you must have a good diet and exercise regularly to burn fat. The first thing you must understand about exercise is that just because you are burning calories does not mean you are burning fat. Your main focus when you exercise should be losing body fat, and you can not lose body fat just from burning calories. When we exercise, our bodies will start burning calories, but the calories that are burned are the calories from carbohydrates in our system. In order to burn calories from your stored fat, your body requires the presence of oxygen. There is a certain amount of oxygen that your body needs in order to start burning fat and the only way for you to measure the amount needed for your own body is to keep up with your target heart rate during exercise.

Please understand that if you continue to only burn calories from carbohydrates, you will lose most "water weight" which leads to a decrease in your metabolism. Also, think of the calories that are burned from carbohydrates as your energy calories. If you lose too much energy calories then your muscles will not receive enough energy to increase your metabolism which indirectly burn fat. Therefore you must increase your calorie intake when you are on an exercise program to replace your burned energy calories.

Burning Fat Calories during exercise

During aerobic exercise, your body goes through several stages before it reaches the point where you are burning fat. You will hear people say that you are only burning sugar (carbohydrates) not fat during the first 10 minutes of exercise. This is true to a certain extent. I say this because you will continue to burn sugar past the 10 minute mark if you are not working out hard enough for your body to want more oxygen; Or you are working out too hard and you can not supply your body with enough oxygen for fat burning. When you exercise you must move at a steady pace (not too fast, not too slow) so your body will utilize your stored fat (not carbohydrates or sugar) as its energy source. Also remember that just because you reached the fat burning stage does not mean you will stay there. Staying at the fat burning stage once again depends on if you are moving at a pace that is right for your body. Make sure that you are within your target heart rate range.

Burning Fat Calories at rest

The only way for you to continue to burn fat calories hours after you have finished working out is through the anaerobic exercise of weight training. Weight training is the key to burning fat at rest. Weight training is an anaerobic activity that will cause you to burn more calories than aerobic exercise. The calories that you are burning during weight training exercises are mostly calories from carbohydrates (meaning you must eat even more calories per day for energy); But the calories you burn at rest are mostly calories from fat. The reason you are burning fat at rest is because weight training increases your metabolism which uses your stored fat as energy.

To make your body the ultimate fat burning machine you must do aerobic (cardio) and anaerobic (weight training) exercises.

Retail Banking – A New Way For Customer Service

With the Independent Commission on UK Banking recently issuing its long awaited report on the state of our current banking landscape, the opportunities contained within it to improve retail banking customer service have been seemingly 'lost in the noise' – with our government apparently wanting to deflect Attention by kicking it into the long grass.

But there is no escaping headline issues that emerged from the final report of Sir John Vickers and collections, sometimes how do we cope with banks that are too big to fail and how do we stop the risk of speculative investment banking toxicifying retail accounts?

Retail UK banking, in contrast to investment banking, should be a simple business in which the bank takes our savings, marks them up and lends them to others, or vice versa. But this simple process has become an unwieldy beast with almost everyone you talk to having a retail bank atrocity story.

A recently conducted study of 1,000 nationally representative retail bank customers, with almost 70% believing that banks do not care very much about what the public think of them, over 75% rating the public image and reputation of the banks' retail operations as mediocre To dreadful, and an eye-watering 86% thinking that the image and reputation of the banks will not improve or will actually decline over the next six months.

Two influences, linked but not identical, seem to be at work. The first factor is the momentum towards online banking and the spotlight that puts on the slow and ponderous 'old way' of doing things. Ask yourself which is preferred – accessing a bank account from the train, your own home or an office, or trudging round to the bank in the rain and joining a queue? Older customers feel less habituated to the online world but the young customers'oting with their feet 'adds considering impetus to this inevitable online momentum.

Thirty years ago a very senior UK bank official remarked in an unguarded moment that High Street banking was hopelessly and irredeemably uneconomical – and nothing that's happened in the intervening years has made that judgment less telling.

The cost of maintaining a local branch network has become a dead weight hung from the necks of banks. If bearing this burden produced contented customers there might be something to be said for it, but it simply fails to do so. Branch managers have significantly been stripped of the power to make decisions on loans, thereby further reducing the reasons to bother visiting the branch. When did you last do so? First Direct has responded to this economic reality with the intelligent stratagem of not having any branches. Yet how have other banks responded?

The second factor is the way retail bank brands are built, maintained and developed. Various studies show that marketing slogans, for example, have very low recognition among the public and the only one that had any genuine customer awareness was HSBC's 'the World's Local Bank.' This slogan was launched in March 2002, showing that it takes a long time and costs a great deal of money to get any sort of transaction and make an impact.

The customers now pay attention to the testimony of other customers than they do to promotional campaigns, with enthusiastic customers and 'brand ambuladors' being the market builders of the future.

A new business model is specifically required for retail UK banking. The old business model was bank-centric where the bank saw itself as a central resource and the customer could approach the bank and humbly inquire if any of its supplier-defined services met the customer's needs. Motivated by incentives, bank staff tried to convince customers that products like Payment Protection Insurance met genuine needs. So much for 'Customer Service'.

There is a clear demand for a customer-centric business model, but few banks appear to be working effectively to meet this demand. When used properly, 'new media' can create genuine conversations with their customers and, as that famous book 'The Cluetrain Manifesto' puts it, "the market becomes a conversation".

Instead of their services being defined by what the bank wants to offer, they can be defined by what the customers need. The 'bank to customer' polarity is reversed and the customer becomes the market-maker of the future.

It all comes down to the culture of the banks themselves. In today's globalized and commoditised world there is always 'choice' but retail banks have sidestepped this evolution because of customer inertia. The general perception is that it is simply too much hassle to change your bank account – and if you do then the next bank you move to will be no better.

This has been resolved in a culture of complacency amidst UK banks. They've been too big and too powerful for too long to worry too much what the customer ACTUALLY thinks. But this will change.

There are new competitors like Metro Bank, dedicated to a customer-centric model, that are changing the game and there is little doubt that the tipping point will come soon.

The bank that will win this battle will be the one that changes its culture towards the agile, customer service centric ethos that is winning out in different sectors and industries across the world.

Of course this conversion is not going to be easy for the big banks to achieve. At board level the banks are often aware of what's happening and what's needed. But layers of die-hard middle management are convinced that the old bank-centric model has enough life left to see out their careers. One major UK bank told us that they already have a team working on customer conversations, and that our research was a day late and a dollar short. But one look at the detailed reports from their customers shows their efforts may be cost but are simply not working. Bank customers are keen – perhaps even desperate – to enlunate their real needs, provided the banks are ready to listen and respond.

Now that the Independent Commission on UK Banking has issued its final report there is a window of opportunity in bank customer service for those senior managers in retail banking who are savvy enough to see it. The question that needs to be answered is will it encourage the banks to hold meaningful conversations with that 86 percent of customers who thinks the improvement of the banks will fail to improve any time soon? Let's hope so.

A Brief History of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a graceful and artistic sport that requires a combination of strength, balance, agility, and muscle coordination, usually performed on specialized apparatus. Gymnasts perform sequences of movements requiring flexibility, endurance, and kinesthetic awareness, such as handsprings, handstands, split leaps, aerials and cartwheels.

Gymnastics as we know it dates back to ancient Greece. The early Greeks practiced gymnastics to prepare for war. Activities like jumping, running, discus throwing, wrestling, and boxing helped develop the muscles needed for hand-to-hand combat. Additional fitness practices used by the ancient Greeks included methods for mounting and dismounting a horses and a variety of circus performance skills.

Gymnastics became a central component of ancient Greek education and was mandatory for all students. Gymnasia, buildings with open-air courts where the training took place, evolved into schools where gymnastics, rhetoric, music, and mathematics were taught. The ancinet Olympic Games were born near this time.

As the Roman Empire ascended, Greek gymnastics for was more or less turned into military training. In 393 AD the Emperor Theodosius abolished the Olympic Games completely. The games had become corrupt, and gymnastics, along with other sports declined. For centuries, gymnastics was all but forgotten.

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries two pioneer physical educators, Johann Friedrich GutsMuth and Friedrich Ludwig Jahn created exercises for boys and young men on sseveral apparatus they had designed. This innovation ultimately led to what is considered modern gymnastics. As a result, Friedrich Jahn became known as the “father of gymnastics”. Jahn introduced the horizontal bar, parallel bars, side horse with pommels, balance beam, ladder, and vaulting horse.

In the early nineteenth century, educators in the United States followed suit and adopted German and Swedish gymnastics training programs. By the early twentieth century, the armed services began publishing drill manuals featuring all manner of gymnastic exercises. According to the US Army Manual of Physical Drill, these important drills provided proper instruction for the bodies of active young men.

As time went by, however, military activity moved away from hand-to-hand combat and toward fighter planes and contemporary computer-controlled weapons. As a result of the development of modern warfare, gymnastics training as the mind and body connection, so important for the Greek, German, and Swedish educational traditions, began to lose force. Gymnastics once again took on the aura of being a competitive sport.

By the end of the nineteenth century, men’s gymnastics was popular enough to be included in the first modern Olympic Games held in 1896. The sport was a little different from what we currently know as gymnastics however. Up until the early 1950s, both national and international competitions involved a changing variety of exercises the modern gymnast may find a bit odd such as synchronized team floor calisthenics, rope climbing, high jumping, running, and horizontal ladder just to name a few.

Women first started to participate in gymnastics events in the 1920s and the first women’s Olympic competition was held in the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, although the only event was synchronized calisthenics. Combined exercises for women were first held in 1928, and the 1952 Olympics featured the first full regime of events for women.

By the 1954 Olympic Games apparatus and events for both men and women had been standardized in modern format, and scoring standards, including a point system from 1 to 10, were implemented.

Modern Men’s gymnastics events are scored on an individual and team basis, and presently include the floor exercise, horizontal bar, parallel bars, rings, pommel horse, vaulting, and the all-around, which combines the scores of the other six events.

Women’s gymnastic events include balance beam, uneven parallel bars, combined exercises, floor exercises, vaulting, and rhythmic sportive gymnastics.

Until 1972, gymnastics for men emphasized power and strength, while women performed routines focused on grace of movement. That year, however, a 17-year-old Soviet gymnast named Olga Korbut captivated a television audience with her innovative and explosive routines.

Nadia Comaneci received the first perfect score, at the 1976 Olympic Games held in Montreal, Canada. She was coached by the famous Romanian, Bela Karolyi. Comaneci scored four of her perfect tens on the uneven bars, two on the balance beam and one in the floor exercise. Nadia will always be remembered as “a fourteen year old, ponytailed little girl” who showed the world that perfection could be achieved.

Mary Lou Retton became America’s sweetheart with her two perfect scores and her gold medal in the All-Around competition in front of the home crowd in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

These days gymnastics is a household name and many children participate in gymnastics at one time or another as they grow up. Olga Korbut, Nadia Comaneci, and Mary Lou Retton, along with all those gymnasts since, have helped popularize women’s competitive gymnastics, making it one of the most watched Olympic events. Both men’s and women’s gymnastics now attract considerable international interest, and excellent gymnasts can be found on every continent.

Landlord – Evicted Tenant Breaks Back Into Your Property

I am a landlord. I have the gray hair to prove it. If that is not enough to prove it, I have some of the most amazing, head-shaking, wtf stories to back it up. Here are some of the more imaginative experiences that I have had as a landlord.

Tenant worked as a janitor at a church while he was waiting for his singing career as a christian musician to take off. He claimed he had tithed all of his rent money that month because he felt the church would do better better with the money. He never could explain why he tithed more than then 10% of my income to the church and did not donate the balance of the 90% of his income to cover his rent. So I evicted him. On eviction day, the sheriff had the eviction company through everything in the corner of the parking lot instead of on the street. My maintenance man was there to change the locks on the front door. After Work I was to meet my business partner at the property so we would drag all the items from parking lot to street. This included multiple bed frames, complete mattress sets, all of his and his 2 children's clothes, washer & dryer, and everything else.

When I arrived at property two hours after the eviction I realized that everything was gone from the parking lot. I figured the tenant had come by with a truck to collect all of his beloveds. I went inside the property to check the condition of the interior. Much to my surprise I discover the tenant had broken in the back door and had moved all of his beloveds back inside the property. I call the police. He calls his church.

Next thing we have is multiple police cars and the minister and about 25 people from the church. The church people decide to join hands and ring the property and start singing christian songs. Of course my evicted talent is standing in the middle singing the loudest solo I have ever heard. When not singing they are praying for the redemption of my soul since I Refuse to evict his belongings from the property a second time in a three hour time period.

I am telling the police to have the tenant arrested from criminal trespassing. His possessions are now my possessions and I have no intention of giving any of it back. The police handcuff the tenant and place him in the back of the squad car. The minister steps up and decides to broker a deal. With the police watching the proceedings, my business partner and I start to lug some of the possessions out of the property and place them in the parking lot. The members of the church then start bidding on buying the items. Once we got close to the amount I was owed on back rent, I decided to sell everything else for $ 1. The church members just happened to purchase everything for the exact amount of what I was owed. The auction process of removing items, selling them, collecting money and then letting the buyer remove the item took almost an hour and a half. After the auction, I decided to drop the criminal trespassing charges against he former tenant and had the police issue him with a warning.

If you are a landlord I highly recommend that you change the locks on both the front and rear doors of your property when you evict a tenant.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Dieting

The pros and cons to dieting can be deceptive. Really there is nothing bad about dieting if you do it right. I know someone who lost 3 pounds a week over the course of a year eating three healthy meals a day and exercising for at least an hour a day. There was nothing unhealthy about his diet, so there are no cons. The cons of dieting generally come from unhealthy diet that are too extreme. The sad thing is that most of these extreme never helped anybody lose any weight in the long term.

A healthy eating plan but no exercise will not help you lose any weight. Likewise a vigorous daily exercise schedule but poor eating habits will also not help you lose any weight. You need to have both vigorous exercise and smart eating if you want to burn body fat. The pros and cons of dieting may not be what you’re thinking about. The good thing about your plan could be your eating habits but the bad thing is not exercising.

Many people have a hard time understanding that moderation is really important. You can’t overdo anything and you can’t under do anything either. A reasonable eating plan and a reasonable exercise plan can help anybody lose weight.

The diets that everyone fail at are the diets that promise you can lose a lot of weight in just a few days. These extreme diets do not work over the long term. Since no one can sustain that kind of weight loss, people following these diets become really dejected and depressed. They are working so hard in making such a great effort, but they are not losing the amount of weight that the diet says they should be able to. As a result they become very depressed and just giving up. Sadly, after they give up the weight starts to come back on in a way just as much as they did before.

The first thing you need to do to succeed at losing weight is to set a year-long weight-loss plan. Whether you want to lose 30 pounds or a hundred pounds, do it in a year. If you want to lose 30 pounds, start out by trying to lose a pound a week. You’ll reach your goal in 30 weeks. If you want to lose 100 pounds, then set a goal of 2 pounds a week. You’ll reach your goal in one year. The key here is to be long-term in your thinking. If you only want to lose 30 pounds and you succeed at doing that in two months, that 30 pounds will come back on again in just 2 to 3 weeks. Why? Because in order to lose 30 pounds in two months you would’ve had to have done some very extreme lack of eating, and a lot of vigorous exercise. After the two months is all over, you’ll be so tired from all the exercise and very little eating you did. The first thing you want to do is just relax and go back to your old eating style. As a result, you’ll put all the weight back on. On the other hand, if you set a year-long goal in lose the weight that you want to in a year you will be developing a daily habit of reasonable eating and exercise that after a year will be easy to continue to maintain throughout the rest of your life. By doing it this way you will learn what it will take daily for you to maintain the weight you want.

The pros and cons of dieting are easy. A positive diet consists of a healthy eating plan and vigorous exercise. A non-healthy diet consists of unreasonable weight loss expectations gained by restrictive eating an unhealthy practices.

Why Online Presence Matters for Businesses

Making it big in business can be extra challenging most especially in this digital age. The irony with all the existing marketing and promotion strategies is that it has also made the competition much stiffer and difficult.

Well, big businesses have it much easier because they have enough working capital to spend on print and broadcast advertising. They can also launch massive promotion campaigns among their target audience by conducting events. On the other hand, for small businesses, their resources are quite limited. They can do flyers, brochures, calling cards, among others. However, they would find it disadvantageous to engage into much more expensive advertising campaigns.

The coming of the Internet has changed the playing field drastically. This is because this new information medium has given small and big businesses alike an additional marketing strategy that is not as expensive as the traditional ones. In fact, it is so effective, most marketing and promotion strategies of many businesses are now concentrated on this medium, all exerting their effort to build a massive online presence.

Indeed, building an online presence definitely offers businesses the needed boost in terms of advertising. Here are some of the reasons why building an online presence can be very advantageous to companies:

It allows businesses to become more accessible to its customers. Online presence has allowed businesses to reach its target customers. In the same way, it has made it possible for customers to easily access businesses for possible services or goods that they would need without having to leave the comforts of their homes. This has changed the landscape of consumerism and most people would prefer transacting with businesses that can offer this kind of off-site service.

The online space can become a business’ office space. Instead of spending for rent or purchasing a physical office space, the established website and other social media sites can become an avenue where customers can go and inquire, purchase goods, or avail of services.

The Internet expands the reach of a business’ market. The physical world has so many limitations. A small business in a small town can only cater to its immediate locale. However, establishing an online presence has allowed small Asian stores to sell their goods to people in America without having to spend so much on advertising. Online presence literally opens a portal where business has become boundless almost surpassing geographical limits.

When used effectively, it can complement traditional marketing and advertising. Given that online media has yet to dominate the top-most sought after information media, advertising though print and broadcast still helps in reaching the more traditional customers. And, when used together, they will be able to craft a very effective business promotion strategy.

It can be used as leverage over competitors. If used properly, online presence can help a business boost its reps especially if its rivals in the market do not use this kind of promotional campaign.

However, building online presence is not just about setting up a website and uploading contents to your heart’s content. That is why it is also very important to know the various strategies in place that could be used to effectively boost a business’ online presence.

Link Building – Defining Importance and Evaluating Strategies for 2015

Link building helps to relate search strings to web pages and is an effective strategy for the popularity of a website. Links provide direction to search engine to help users search the content they are looking for on web. Search engines constantly redefine the algorithms and use link data to perform site assessment with respect to a search query.

Although links form a part of the entire gamut of SEO related activity, experts attribute links as an important determinant of search engine’s algorithm to relate to links. Links provide a foundation for search engines to evaluate the popularity of pages. Links provide the benchmarks for assessment of websites based on trustworthiness, spammy nature and ranking (depending on authority). As provided by Hiltop Algorithm, links act on an authority model to refer the most expert pages related to a given subject. (1)

Process Management

Link building should follow the best practices as per Google guidelines and needs to be done the correct way to harness maximum benefit for SEO. Creative strategies need to be developed in a manner that the target audience is compelled to get engaged with the website link. The process should be systematic, scientific and creative.

Link building strategy involves understanding the client website thoroughly. It involves understanding specific elements; its unique selling point, industry vertical, market presence, inherent value, area of operation, nature of target audience and various products/service segments. All of these can be treated as linkable assets.

By comparing and contrasting various elements a strategy can be devised which relates the target audience to these elements through links as a medium, assessed the effectiveness of the strategy and make modifications depending on results.(2)

Link building – Marketer’s View

Link building is getting the grasp of the website and target audience from a marketing perspective. It involves understanding why the website should be valued by the target audience, why any user would want to visit it, and why it is worth linking to. An applicable marketing strategy here is compelling in nature and has a credible and influential outreach. The exercise aims to obtain the contact between the client’s website and the target audience by specifying the importance and value of the client’s website for them and what unique benefit might the users obtain by visiting the particular website. If implemented correctly link building can act as immensely helpful marketing strategy for creating brand awareness, brand promotion, lead generation and lead conversion.(3)

Links serve as a marketer’s tool to indicate the relevancy and authority to Google and to the website’s unique audience group. It aims to foster trust between linked websites and enable Google to detect tactics which provide manipulative search results and extremely poor user experience. (4)

Link Building Strategies for 2015

With increased usage of internet as a medium to look out for information, products and services, link building would continue to remain popular with marketers aiming who use it as an opportunity to create brand awareness.

Search: Online presence for business is needed to command authority, visibility and reach. Websites are the digital information brochure of the company that advertises what the business stands for. Websites can be more valuable than a brick and mortar store. Search acts as the most principal channel online for various marketing initiatives such as lead generation and conversion, image management, revenues, search visibility needs to be part of the strategy. This is validated from the fact that search accounts for major traffic source for a website. The focus in 2015 should be to enhance the search presence, improve authority and visibility of websites. This happens by acknowledging and defining link opportunity for conducting link building exercise.(5)

Relationship building with authors: Effectiveness of link building strategy depends on defining the quality criteria of websites which link back to the company’s site. It is all the more important to develop relationship with websites which link back to the company site. Google not only cares about the content, but also the websites and authors which are providing the links.

The concept of ‘authorship tag’ aims to reflect the authority of authors and sites which are related to the content providing the links. An author rank – which marks the reputation of authors to determine content quality – is an important element of search results. Thus, 2015 will involve developing strong ties with opinion influencers and developing long term relationship with authors.(6)

Rich Content: Marketers should focus on developing high quality content having links to their website as poor content is rejected by Google. Quality is generally be defined by the unique proposition of the business and target audience. The content should have demonstrated good linkage in the area in which the website wants to rank well as it points to what has worked well. With the introduction of content based algorithm Humminbird of Google, the content should possess narrow and focused keywords related to the company’s niche area.(7)

The established importance of link building for gaining visibility, authority, promotion and lead conversion calls for embracing best practices for link building strategy. This involves understanding the importance of search, developing relationship with influencers, developing good quality and acceptable content in a targeted niche segment for effective search marketing strategies. Creating fantastic content is of no use unless the links lead to the first page of Google in ranking.

"I Don`t Make Enough Money to Incorporate!"
Will Incorporating Really Benefit You?

Some persons resist the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčincorporating themselves because
The tax savings may not justify the added costs of incorporation,
Annual minutes, and extra tax returns. However, incorporation gives
Advantages that go far beyond tax savings.

Insurance may give you some protection against loss. However, you
May suffer business losses and lawsuits that may not be covered. For
Extra protection, consider incorporating yourself. The limited

And complexity.

Corporations may also be used for income-splitting with your family,

"I really need an office out.

Unnecessary overhead in order to impress clients and prospects. Often

Example is getting an impressive, but expensive, commercial office

Customers aren't stupid. They can see when such outside space is
Necessary or advantageous for them. They can also see when it is a
Waste of money and designed to fuel your ego. What matters most to
Clients is wherever they are getting cost-effective results or not. If
Your product or service delivers such excellent value, your customers
Will be impressed and come back. In contrast, if one allows his ego to
Get in the way of satisfying the customers` needs, they will go

With the move to telecommuting, downsizing, networked communications,

Smart and trendy. Can you think of a more appropriate location for a
Consulting firm specializing in home-based businesses? They of all

Image. If you are really concerned about your image, offer quality
Service. Make sure that all your corporate communications (telephone,
Websites, printed materials, et cetera) reflect the professional nature
Of your business.

"Since we`re not seeking financing,
We don`t need a business plan. "

To obtain financing, many persons will prepare a business plan.
Although entrepreneurs will go to great lengths to get their loan or
Capital, these same business persons will not bother to plan ahead very
Far or analyze their business. Even if you required no additional
Money, preparing a business plan can help you to succeed in your

Running a business without a plan is like going on a trip without a
Map, sufficient gas, money, or even a destination. Just as you wouldn`t
Go on a vacation without some planning, no business can be successful
Without it. Putting that plan in writing helps you to think out a
Strategy for successfully operating and growing your business.

Where is your business today? Where will it be tomorrow? What is your
Mission statement? What product lines are profitable? Which ones
Aren`t? What business do you think you are in? What business do your
Clients think you are in? Should you be in a different business? Is
Your product or service less attractive to your clients? How are
Competition, global commerce, technological and social changes affecting
Your company? What is your competitive strength? What are your
Weaknesses? Who are your biggest competitors? What are their
Weaknesses and strengths? What is your marketing strategy?

What are your projected income and expenses and cashflow for the next
Year? How about the next five years? Do you have a capital budget?
What determines whether you buy an asset or not? Do you have an exit
Strategy? How will you manage growth? Do you have a financial plan? Do
You have an operations plan? What definite sales and net profit targets
Have you set for this year and the next five years? What factors could
Interfere with the attaining of these goals? What contingency plans have
You made to deal with such problems?

Popular Misconception # 6:
"I like bartering with clients
Because it saves paperwork and taxes. "
Are You Reporting Barter Transactions?

Bartering is an excellent way of doing business. However, contrary to
Popular belief, some barter transactions are taxable, both for income
And sales tax purposes.

Legally, you must maintain adequate financial records for your business.
Barter transactions made by your business must be reported to the
Appropriate taxation authorities and taxes paid. However, transactions
Between friends not engaging in business with each other may not be

If you are an auto mechanic and I am an accountant and I swap accounting
Services for your car repair services, the transaction in this case is
Most likely taxable, even if we are friends. However, your accounting
Fees should be deductible as a business expense and so should the
Business portion of my car expenses. Note also that sales and similar
Taxes may apply on this transaction.

On the other hand, if I trade accounting services for a vacation for my
Family, I should really declare the value of such services as income.
The firm supplying the vacation would be able to deduct that value as
Accounting fees. Any sales or similar taxes would have to be paid on
Such transaction.

Many persons don`t record such transactions. For some, it may be a
Matter of wanting to believe that you don`t need to be bothered with the
Extra paperwork or taxes. Remember, though, that ignorance of the law
Is no excuse. Legally, you must keep proper records and pay all taxes

Employers arrange their affairs in such a way that those working for
Them are self-employed, independent contractors. This is good tax

On the other hand, some employers take the position that all those
Working for them are self-employed, whether they are or not. Although
It is tempting to eliminate payroll taxes and workers` compensation
Premiums, care should be taken to do so legally.

Whether those working for you are employed or self-employed is a
Question of fact (which can be determined by the Courts). Do you supply
The tools and vehicles? Do you determine the working hours? Do you
Have the right to control how the job will be done? Do you pay a
Flat-rate or by-the-hour or a salary? Does your worker have other

By asking several such questions, a pattern will emerge as to wherever
Your worker is employed or self-employed. If it turns out that your
Worker fits all the criteria of an employee, don`t say he`s
Self-employed. On audit, you would still be responsible for the payroll
Taxes (and penalties and interest as well).

Even if your workers are considered independent contractors by the
Income Tax Department, it is still possible that they will be considered
To be "workers" for purposes of Workers` Compensation legislation.
Thus, it is the responsibility of the employer to determine whether such
Coverage is necessary or not. Failure to obtain proper coverage could
Subject you to substantial (and unnecessary) costs.

In review, calling someone self-employed, doesn`t needarily make them
Self-employed. If you have a dog, call it a dog. Your position that
Your dog is really a cat will not be successful. Likewise, make sure
That your position regarding your workers is legally correct.

Popular Misconception # 8:
"My Accountant Charges Too Much.
I Can`t Afford It Anymore. "

Many business persons view bookkeeping, accounting, and tax preparation

Forty years of age. As well as the very rich, you can find many cases
